At the start of this campaign I said that the issue of Julia Gillard knifing Kevin Rudd was not high on the mind of electors. As it turns out, I was wrong. In fact, to my surprise, most of the electors I have spoken to around the place actually think Julia’s treachery and cold and calculating ways are a massive turn off!
The theory is this; people didn’t like Kevin so they wanted the chance to punish him at an election. Julia beat them to it. That’s just not the Australian way.
Although people are cranky now, I still maintain that come Election Day people won’t let the knifing affect the way they vote. Some may disagree, but I don’t believe the sentiment that clearly exists now will carry through to August 21.
On Election Day people decide on how to vote according to things that really matter. Like how much money Julia promises to give me for the 1974 Torana in my front yard that I have wanted to do up for 10 years. That $2k will allow me to get a lovely upgrade of my plasma TV that Kevin gave me last year (Refer to this story in Courier Mail).
If people were not happy with the way that Julia Gillard gained office they would not be as equally pleased with the way Tony rolled Malcolm out of his top job just because Malcolm believed in something and stuck to it. This sentiment clearly does not exist.
Most people realise that Julia Gillard had to do something with a Government that was bleeding, and plus she had smarter ways of working out what to do with all those old cars clogging front yards throughout Australia.
A swing away from the Government in Queensland is just a correction from the last election. Queensland is a conservative State, so it is natural that most of the Labor gains that were made at the last election will self correct at this election.
Swings in Queensland were coming with or without Kev’s knifing. Queenslanders just need an excuse not to vote Labor this time, as the mining tax has been neutralised..... for now.
On another note Laurie Oaks has written a piece in the Courier Mail today in support of my position on the character of our national leaders (Refer to this story in Courier Mail).
Laurie says (among other things) “The sad truth is we have a pair of political pygmies heading the two major parties in this election”.
