One year ago this month the Liberal National Party was formed. The unification of the conservative parties in Queensland had been a long time coming. The LNP was created from the remnants of the Liberal and National parties in Queensland. It was a momentous occasion for our state.

What can the LNP do to prepare itself for forming government and becoming campaign ready?

1. Our primary goal needs to be carving a place in the body politic as a party focused on the future. What can we offer the next generation and as well as Queensland’s maturing population?

2. The LNP must finalise the internal processes of unification. The benefits of an amalgamated party are numerous and best demonstrated by the success and ground made at the recent state election. The onus is in on our Parliamentary team to unite behind one leader and stay the course through the challenges of opposition.

3. To win seats we need new and inspiring campaigning methods. At every twist and turn the ALP manages to out fox us during campaigns. The old approach of campaign fundraising and methods of attracting attention need review.

4. Our policy formation needs to be bold and impressive. The establishment of a youth council to engage with gen X and Y would be a progressive step forward. We also need a business forum which MPs and candidates can tap directly into for knowledge and resources. Going forward a clearer strategy around methods of direct communication with the general public is needed.

5. The scary reality is that letting the unions run the state/country will lead the community to ruin. But how do we get this message out? Unions are anti-growth, anti-worker and anti-family. Our message about the destruction unions threaten our community with need not focus on the more extreme elements of the union movement but highlight just some of the more ‘moderate’ members of the unions.

6. The cynicism with which people view politicians is constantly deepening. Only genuine candidates who connect with people and who have their constituencies at heart will win elections. As cynicism with politicians grows we need to move the focus to more community based candidates.

7. A greater array of quality candidates must step up to the plate. The onus is on the party and business community to hunt out great candidates and then support those candidates by building a campaign team around them. One person cannot do this task.

8. Our LNP brand needs to be strengthened and embraced by each tier of the party.

9. What’s wrong with getting celebrity Australian’s talking about our message? High profile Australians that people trust can build creditability into our message.

10. All politics is local. Our branches need to be re-built in areas depleted if we will have any chance of learning about the things that matter street by street suburb by suburb across the state.

The ALP is on the nose and momentum is with us. Navel gazing will get us nowhere. The state needs an effective opposition focused on policy formation and providing for the future. At that point we will not be a party of opposition, but the natural party of government.
